Privacy policy
Trace is analytics that studies patterns, not people, and this policy follows the same idea: it says plainly what is collected, why, and where it goes. Trace is run by Deyan Dobrinov, an individual, not a company. Questions, or requests about your data: hello@tracetells.com.
On this website (tracetells.com)
This site measures itself with Trace, but only if you click Allow on the bar at the bottom of the page. Until you do, and if you click No thanks, nothing is stored on your device and nothing is sent. Your answer itself is kept in your browser (as trc_consent) so the bar doesn't ask again. You can change it any time with Privacy choices at the bottom of every page. Browsers that send Global Privacy Control are treated as a no.
If you allow it, Trace keeps a random visitor id and session id in your browser's local storage, and records:
- the pages you view, with ids in addresses grouped and query strings removed;
- clicks on buttons and links (which element, not what you type), scrolling, time on page and JavaScript errors;
- the website you came from (its address only), your browser's user-agent string and a rough device size.
It never records what you type, page titles, the content of pages or a replay of your visit, and it does not store your IP address. The data is used only to see, in aggregate, how this site is used and what to improve. It is not sold, shared for advertising or combined with other data.
The site itself is hosted on GitHub Pages and loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so GitHub and Google receive the usual technical details of your request, such as your IP address, under their own policies.
If you use the hosted service (app.tracetells.com)
To run your account, Trace stores your email address, your name if you give one, a hash of your password (never the password itself), your two-step verification secret if you turn it on, your sign-in sessions and API tokens (as hashes), and an activity log of changes made in your account. It sends no email: no newsletters and no marketing.
The websites you connect send their visitors' behaviour to Trace, as described above. You decide which websites send data and whether they ask visitors for consent first; Trace stores and processes that data only to provide the service to you. Raw events are deleted when they are older than your plan keeps (30 days on Free); the insights and evaluations made from them are kept with your account.
Analysis is done by your own coding agent, over Trace's MCP server, with the model you choose. Trace sends no data to an AI provider itself.
Where the data is
The hosted service runs on a server rented from Hetzner in Helsinki, Finland. The people who can reach that data are the operator (Deyan Dobrinov) and the hosting provider, as its terms allow. Backups are kept for 14 days.
